Threat to Brussels Airport highlights aviation`s economic contribution
Monday, October 10, 2005
AEA has expressed its support for the I love my airport job campaign to protect Brussels National Airport against threats to its future arising from political infighting at local, regional and national levels. The initiative is a joint action involving many of the enterprises at and around the airport, which depend on it for their livelihood.
The airport provides employment to about 60,000 people, but is also a crucial component of the livelihood of many tens of thousands more. The campaign is based around the massive contribution the airport makes to the local economy. Beyond that, Brussels` position at the centre of the European political stage is defined by its accessibility.
Said AEA Secretary General Ulrich Schulte-Strathaus: The airport is the gateway through which the EU institutions reach the member states and vice versa; it is also the gateway between Belgium and the rest of the world. It should be nobody`s pawn.
