Tourism Australia
Australia number one in the UK
Thursday, June 08, 2006
In a huge boost to the Australian tourism industry, young travellers in the United Kingdom have voted Australia as the destination they most want to visit next, Tourism Australia Managing Director, Scott Morrison said.

“According to the latest Lonely Planet poll, young travellers in the UK have voted Australia as the destination they most want to visit next,” Scott Morrison said.

“In welcome news for the tourism industry, Australia has moved up from third place last year and has this year outpolled the United States, Thailand, Spain, New Zealand, India and Italy. A key objective of the ‘So where the bloody hell are you?’ campaign is to generate excitement around Australia as a destination and to refresh Australia in the mind of consumers such as backpackers and other young travellers.”

“Recent improvements by the Australian Government to the working holiday visa arrangements are also having a major impact. The Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Senator Vanstone, recently announced an expansion to the range of industries that backpackers can work in to qualify for the visa extension announced last year,” explained Mr. Morrison.

“Young international travellers can now work with one employer for up to six months and extend their study time from three to four months. The Australian Government clearly understands the challenges facing the highly lucrative youth market and is taking action to address these challenges,” Scott Morrison said.

Scott Morrison added, “Young travellers are a key high yield market, with their high dispersal and length of stay delivering immediate economic benefit to regional, rural and remote communities around Australia. We will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure that these young people continue to make Australia their number one destination in the world.”
