Industry experts set `pro travel` agenda
Friday, November 23, 2001
Senior representatives from travel and tourism organizations have joined forces to produce an agenda to encourage renewed support for the sector, following the effects of 11 September.

A group of experts ranging from British Airways, British Tourist Authority, World Tourism Organization (Business Council), Thomas Cook, Jurys Doyle, to Lastminute.com, met in London on Friday 9 November for a one-day think to develop ideas to boost the recovery of global tourism.

Hosted by KPMG<.>, the global professional services firm, and chaired by Geoffrey Lipman of Sustainable Tourism Laboratory, the recommendations, which will be distributed to senior government, media and industry leaders include:

A global `pro travel` initiative that promotes the value of travel and tourism to both travellers and the industry
Innovative employment programs such as retraining and career breaks which allow long term redeployment
A proportion of agricultural subsidies should be used to promote tourism in rural areas
Reduction in barriers to industry consolidation while stimulating competition
Strong support for infrastructure investment, particularly airports, air traffic control and inter-modal links

Geoffrey Lipmpan, said `Difficult times require radical approaches. The `Pro Travel` agenda is designed to stimulate a strategic rethink in the way companies and government interact. It`s long been time to reshape, and the current situation has created the pressures and the window of opportunity`.

Hugh Gree, UK Head of Travel, Leisure and Tourism at KPMG said: `We see this agenda as an encouraging first step towards change, and it is that we put these words into action. The industry faces many challenges today, but is well placed to address them and should emerge far stronger as a result`.
