Wednesday, September 06, 2006
A group of tourists was the target of a gunman in Amman, Jordan. The man opened fire to the foreigners` group killing one British citizen and wounding six other people. We will ascertain in the next period whether this was a sole act or whether this individual is a member of a terrorist cell, Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakheet told reporters after a visit to the hospital where the wounded were being treated.
Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit, and the governments of US and UK condemned the attack.
“We have confidence in our security forces, and the government will exert all possible efforts to maintain security for our citizens and guests,” PM said after visiting the injured tourists at the Bashir Hospital.
Nabil Ahmad, a thirty years old Jordanian was the responsible for the shooting as Eid al-Fayez, Interior Minister of Jordan said. The minister told that Ahmad acted on his own.
Government spokesman Nasser Joudeh told Reuters the wounded were two Britons, a Dutch national, a New Zealander, an Australian and their Jordanian tour guide.
Responding to the attack on tourists in Amman, the Foreign Secretary of UK, Margaret Beckett said: I was extremely saddened to learn about the fatal shooting of a British tourist in Jordan earlier this afternoon in which two other British nationals were also injured. My sympathies are with the victims and their families. Acts of violence such as this are as senseless as they are callous. Our Embassy in Amman is offering every possible assistance to those involved. We are very grateful to the Jordanian authorities for their prompt and efficient response and we will continue to offer them our full support.
