City of Athens stages first youth-focused conference
Friday, December 01, 2006
The City of Athens Youth and Sport Organisation (ONA) is holding its first conference focused on issues affecting young people, from December 1-3 at the Ledra Marriott hotel in Athens. President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias will launch the conference, entitled “Youth 2006: Education – Culture – Sport and Local Government”.

Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos, Education Minister Marietta Giannakou, Hellenic Olympic Committee chairman Minos Kyriakou, Athens Mayor-elect Nikitas Kaklamanis and numerous well-known individuals from the fields of sport, culture and education will also attend.

The three-day conference is the highlight of ONA’s 70th anniversary celebrations but also a unique opportunity to promote Athens’ hosting of the 2009 International Children’s Games. Meanwhile, an exhibition promoting ONA’s sport and cultural programmes for youth will be held at the City of Athens Technopolis in Gazi.

Conference participants, to include newly-elected and re-elected municipal councillors and community representatives from throughout the country, will be informed on the possibilities of joint initiatives between local government, the Ministries of the Interior, Education and Culture, the General Secretariat of Sport, agencies and organizations with similar interests, and the private sector.

The conference aims to contribute to the promotion of the healthy development of youth, Greek culture, sporting ideals, the Olympic spirit and Olympic sports.

The International Children’s Games, to be held in Athens in 2009 under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee, will be among the initiatives to be presented at the conference.

Additionally, a proposal by ONA and International Children’s Games Deputy Chairman, Greek-Canadian Yiannis Kyriakopoulos for the staging of International Children’s Games for Third and Fourth Generation Diaspora Greeks in Greece will also be discussed at the event.

The conference is being organised with the support of the Ministry of the Interior and in cooperation with the Education Ministry’s New Generation General Secretariat.

An exhibition entitled “Youth 2006”, to take place at the Technopolis, will feature youth sport and cultural programmes run by municipalities and other local authorities from throughout Greece. Mayor-elect Kaklamanis will officially launch the exhibition on Saturday, December 2, at Technopolis, Athens. It will be open from December 1 to 6, 2006.
