New General Manager at The Ritz-Carlton in Cancun

Hermann W. Elger has been appointed General Manager of the Five Diamond oceanfront resort, The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun, Mexico, announced Ezzat Coutry, Senior Vice President, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C..

After four years in the position of Hotel Manager at The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun, Mr. Elger assumes the leading role of this luxurious resort in the Mexican Caribbean; although, his association with the hotel started in August 1998 when he held the position of Assistant Executive Manager, responsible for the Rooms Division.

He joined The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company in 1993 at The Ritz-Carlton, Aspen in Colorado where he developed his career as Director of Rooms Division. Since then, he has taken different responsibilities in over 12 Ritz-Carlton hotels and resorts around the world.

Over his 18 years of experience in the luxury hospitality industry, Mr. Elger has also enjoyed a variety of key leadership roles during hotel openings in international destinations including Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Dubai as well as Washington, D.C. and Miami in the United States.

With a solid passion to keep positioning the hotel as one of the most recognized resorts in the world he mentioned “Our goal is to constantly adapt to the changing needs of our guests while being loyal to our well-known service values”.

A creative and dynamic hotelier, he envisioned The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun Culinary Center by Viking, a recreational cooking center; the creation of the Kayanta Spa and the Beach Villa concept, featuring private palapas with upgraded services by the sea. He is known for continuously exploring new ways to surprise and delight the discerning luxury guests.

Born in Mexico City, Mr. Elger earned a degree in Business Administration and Hotel Management from the University of Denver.

How do you expect luxury travel to perform in times of economic downturn?.

Providers of luxury travel products are going to witness shorter stays by their customers and an increase in seasonality.

People are going to become more value conscious and will opt for those luxury offers that represent a convincing value-for-money proposition. Providers of overpriced services are those to feel the pinch.

Both people paying for their personal trips and firms paying for their top executives' business trips will cut back on travel expenses, thus affecting all luxury travel providers.

It is going to be business as usual. Those people opting for high-end travel products are not going to be affected by the looming crisis.
