in Athens on November
28th, 2003.

Career summary

Born on April 20th, 1948 in the Varda township, Ileia prefecture
(Peloponnese), Georgakopoulos studied at the University of Athens' natural sciences school
(Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Department of Economics) as well as at the Athens Law School's economics
school.

He was active in the anti-dictatorship struggle during the seven-year military junta in Greece, culminating in 1973 with his participation in the students' uprisings at the Athens Law School and the Athens Polytechnic. He was a founding member of PASOK in 1974 and among the founders of the party's local organisations in his hometown, Varda, and the Kolonos district of central Athens.

Parliamentary
activities

Elected MP (PASOK) for Ileia
prefecture in the general elections of 1981, 1985, 1989 (November), 1990, 1993, 1996 and 2000. Member of the Standing Committees on Defence and Foreign Affairs, and on Economic Affairs. He has also served on the Standing Committee on Production and Trade. Formerly parliamentary spokesman for PASOK. Former member of the Greek delegation to the Council of
Europe (1985-1989), where he sat on the Committees on Economic Affairs and Development; on Migration, Refugees and Demography; and on Science and Technology.

Voted onto the Presidium of the PASOK Parliamentary Group in
1990, followed by his election as the party's third parliament spokesman in
1996.

Social activities



  • Deputy Minister for Development since
    October 24th, 2001.



  • Deputy Finance Minister for several terms:
    April 24th, 1986 to October 31st, 1986, October 13th, 1993 to July
    8th, 1994, July 8th, 1994 to September 15th, 1995, and September 15th,
    1995 to January 22nd, 1996.



  • Between 1986-89 Georgakopoulos served as a member of PASOK's policy bureau.



  • He was instrumental in setting up
    PASOK party organisations around the country.



  • Very active in the Bank Employees Labour Union.



Georgakopoulos is married.
