AAA survey finds Americans want explosive-detection equipment in airports sooner rather than later
Tuesday, September 03, 2002
Eight out of ten Americans said they want no delays in the installation of explosive-detection equipment at the nation`s airports, according to a survey released by AAA<.>.
Under federal law, airports in the United States are required to install explosive-detection devices by the end of the year. Many airport managers have said the installation of the devices cannot be completed by December 31, without causing significant disruptions at the nation`s airports. Congress is considering extending the deadline.
Even though respondents were told about potential delays, 81 percent of those polled said the machines should be installed as scheduled despite this concern. Fifteen percent of respondents said the installation should be delayed and 4 percent were undecided.
Opinion Research Corp. conducted the national survey on August 23-25 for AAA, North America`s largest leisure travel agency. The survey sampled the opinions of 1022 randomly selected U.S. adults. The margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 3.1 percent.
