Government of Spain awards Chief Executive of the Thomas Cook Group
Friday, November 16, 2007
On behalf of the Government of Spain, the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Commerce for Spain, Joan Clos, presented Manny Fontenla-Novoa, the Chief Executive of the Thomas Cook Group, with the Medal of The Order of Isabella the Catholic.

Manny Fontenla-Novoa has been awarded this medal for his contribution to services to Spain. Under his leadership Manny Fontenla-Novoa has turned the Thomas Cook Group from a loss-making company into the UK’s most profitable travel group. The Thomas Cook Group is now one of the most important tour operators for Spain.

The Order of Isabella the Catholic was introduced by Fernando VII of Spain in 1815 to recognise those whose contribution has either benefited Spain or made a significant difference to its international relations and global standing. While doing that he has continued to champion the package holiday, support travel agents, research innovative new ways to sell holidays and deliver some of the best customer service in the industry.

The medal was presented to Manny Fontenla-Novoa, at a private ceremony attended by key figures within the tourism industry on Monday 12 November 2007, during World Travel Market.

How do you expect luxury travel to perform in times of economic downturn?.

Providers of luxury travel products are going to witness shorter stays by their customers and an increase in seasonality.

People are going to become more value conscious and will opt for those luxury offers that represent a convincing value-for-money proposition. Providers of overpriced services are those to feel the pinch.

Both people paying for their personal trips and firms paying for their top executives' business trips will cut back on travel expenses, thus affecting all luxury travel providers.

It is going to be business as usual. Those people opting for high-end travel products are not going to be affected by the looming crisis.
