ALIS, the lodging industry’s annual premier investment conference addressing the unique needs of the hotel investment community, has made eco-friendly business practices a priority in 2008. Held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles, new eco-friendly initiatives include printing most items on paper made from recycled materials, using biodegradable delegate bags, and locally-sourced food supplies.
Duncan’s expertise in the field serves to strengthen the eco-friendly goals of ALIS. In addition to her post as deputy editor of The Economist, the world’s most preeminent weekly news and business journal, she writes a regular column for The Sunday Telegraph and is the author of two books on the business of sustainability, “The Heat is On” and “Cleaning Up: Business and Climate Change.” Duncan has traveled internationally researching and collaborating with world leaders on solutions for climate change challenges and its effects on economic and business development.
“Having Duncan as keynote speaker at this year’s ALIS will be vital in educating key investors within the hospitality community of the existing challenges and new opportunities presented by global sustainability issues,” said BHN President and Conference Chair Jim Burba. “As everyone’s attention turns to identifying new ways to practice eco-friendly business, Duncan’s expertise will provide insight to the diverse array of innovative industry professionals and trendsetters attending ALIS.”
In addition to an emphasis in the greening of the hotel industry, ALIS features a wide range of seminars and panels hosted by leading experts and investors discussing other important trends and new opportunities. Topics include capital markets and finance, owner investments and asset management, development, acquisitions, management and franchising, vacation ownership, international opportunities, and diversity. This year’s theme, “Tour d’ ALIS – The Incredible Race Continues?” reflects the cycling atmosphere and the positive, changing mood of the industry.
