"The Youth Olympic Games will draw top young global sporting talents to Singapore, enabling our local athletes to pit their abilities against the best in the world. The Youth Olympic Games will galvanise our vision to be a centre for sporting excellence ahead of the opening of the new Sports Hub in 2011, as well as bolster Singapore’s standing as a compelling destination for major international events, such as the 2006 Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group."

He went on to say "To be held in August 2010, the Youth Olympic Games will dovetail with a watershed in Singapore’s dynamic and transforming tourism landscape – the opening of the two Integrated Resorts, The Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World at Sentosa; the first phase of Gardens by the Bay at Marina South; the Marina Bay Financial Centre, and a refurbished Orchard Road.

"The Youth Olympic Games will cast international media spotlight on Singapore and serve as an opportune platform for us to showcase these exciting tourism developments and attractions, which will dramatically re-define and enhance Singapore’s tourism landscape come 2010."

In terms of its contribution to the tourism sector, this 12-day event is expected to draw 3,200 athletes, aged between 14 and 18 years, who will compete in 26 sporting categories. It is expected to attract an estimated 15,000 overseas participants, including athletes, officials, spectators and media, and generate a minimum of 180,000 visitor nights for Singapore.

The whole of Singapore is behind this endeavour. The Singapore Tourism Board will continue to support the planning and organisation of the world’s inaugural Youth Olympic Games.

"We will work with tourism and hospitality industry partners and fellow government agencies to ensure that the young athletes and international delegates will have uniquely memorable experiences during their time here," concluded Mr. Lim Neo Chian.
