Monday, January 03, 2000
The countries of the Mediterranean are set to fall under the spotlight at the Scandinavian tourism exhibition MATKA 2000, set to take place in Helsinki from January 20-23.
All Mediterranean participants will be gathered under the one roof at Hall One, close to the long-haul, exotic destinations. Remaining European countries, Russia, Finnish destinations, Baltic states, transport companies and travel agencies will be located in Hall Two.
Around 69,000 trade visitors and members of the public attended MATKA 1999, which involved 1,675 exhibitors from 51 countries. This year's event, held at the Helsinki Fair Centre, will see participants from around the world, state and international tourism organisations, travel agencies, hotel chains and transport firms, including airlines.
More than 1,200 professionals took part in workshops held at MATKA 99, organised for the ninth consecutive year with the support of Finland's travel agents' union. This year, the workshops will focus on the computer age and its effect on tourism.
