EUROCONTROL accepts the SESAR Master Plan and the Work Programme for 2008-2013
Friday, April 25, 2008

EUROCONTROL, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, has accepted the 'SESAR Master Plan' (D5) and the associated 'Work Programme for 2008-2013' (D6) from the SESAR Consortium.

D5, the 'SESAR Master Plan', lays out how the ATM Target Concept, defined in previous SESAR deliverables, can be put in place. It sets out a phased implementation which addresses the lifecycle from feasibility and Research and Development through to deployment. It establishes the roadmaps for the evolution of operations, for enabler development and deployment and for supporting changes including safety and environment. D5 also addresses the associated benefits provided by this ATM Target Concept, funding and financing aspects as well as risks.

D6, the 'Work Programme for 2008-2013', identifies all the projects in the 2008-2013 timeframe which are necessary to support the implementation of the ATM Target Concept. This includes the deployment of existing systems; the development of systems which are almost mature; applied research to refine the concept and develop technical solutions; and longer-term research. It also makes recommendations regarding the methods and management processes for supporting the Development Phase.

"We are pleased to accept these two deliverables from the SESAR Consortium which have been delivered according to the schedule set in 2005 at the beginning of the project," said Bernard Miaillier, SESAR Project Manager at EUROCONTROL. "They are timely and essential, and will contribute to the SESAR Development Phase and the SESAR Joint Undertaking moving from set-up to cruise mode."

D5 and D6 can be found on EUROCONTROL's website (www.eurocontrol.int). They will be presented in an open forum on May the 6th in Rome.

Poll
How is the use of biofuels by the aviation industry going to affect the environment?

It will be a positive step towards fighting climate change, as the aviation industry will be able to reduce its C02 emissions.

It will be positive for the environment but it will cause huge problems in other industries such as the food industry, especially in food supply.

It will have a negative impact as the widespread planting and use of biofuel crops could threaten the natural ecosystems.

It will harm the environment as carbon savings from biofuels are negligible.
