Ritz Tours, a U.S.-based escorted tour company selling vacation packages to Asia, is reporting that the recent earthquake in China has had no impact on their operation of tours throughout China as well as cruises along China’s majestic Yangtze River. “All of our passengers and personnel in China are safe and were not impacted by the earthquake,” said Martin Chan, founder and president, Ritz Tours. “Our tours are not going into the epicenter areas impacted by the earthquake and therefore everything is operating on schedule.”

“Victoria Cruises is operating normally after the earthquake in Wenchaun, China,” said Larry Greenman, manager of public relations and customer service for Victoria Cruises, the pre-eminent cruise company sailing China’s Yangtze River. “While the earthquake was felt on land, and there was some sway felt along the river, our passengers are safe and the river is now calm. There has been no damage to our fleet.”

How do you expect luxury travel to perform in times of economic downturn?.

Providers of luxury travel products are going to witness shorter stays by their customers and an increase in seasonality.

People are going to become more value conscious and will opt for those luxury offers that represent a convincing value-for-money proposition. Providers of overpriced services are those to feel the pinch.

Both people paying for their personal trips and firms paying for their top executives' business trips will cut back on travel expenses, thus affecting all luxury travel providers.

It is going to be business as usual. Those people opting for high-end travel products are not going to be affected by the looming crisis.
