PATA launches "Sustainable Tourism Wiki"
Thursday, June 19, 2008
As well as creating immediate and daunting challenges for travel and tourism operators, rising oil and food prices are a stark reminder that we must never lose sight of the long-term challenge to make our industry truly sustainable, says Hong Kong Polytechnic University Assistant Professor Dr Thomas Bauer.

As the Chair of PATA's Sustainable Tourism Advisory Committee, Dr Bauer has backed a new media initiative to share theory, best practice, links and resources pertaining to sustainable tourism: "PATA's Sustainable Tourism Wiki" at www.PATA.org/sustainability.

"The internet offers us the perfect platform to share our knowledge and resources with each other,"
said Dr Bauer. "I urge you to join and contribute to PATA.org/sustainability."

Dr Bauer also commended the Association on its "outstanding achievement in boldly hosting a unique travel industry event on climate change"; the PATA CEO Challenge 2008: Confronting Climate Change, April 29-30 in Bangkok.

"I would like to encourage you to browse the audio-visual highlights and full coverage of the event at ceochallenge.PATA.org,"
he said. "You will also find links to more information about the Challenge's featured initiatives."

Poll
How do you expect luxury travel to perform in times of economic downturn?.

Providers of luxury travel products are going to witness shorter stays by their customers and an increase in seasonality.

People are going to become more value conscious and will opt for those luxury offers that represent a convincing value-for-money proposition. Providers of overpriced services are those to feel the pinch.

Both people paying for their personal trips and firms paying for their top executives' business trips will cut back on travel expenses, thus affecting all luxury travel providers.

It is going to be business as usual. Those people opting for high-end travel products are not going to be affected by the looming crisis.
