New golf developments in Aberdeen, Scotland
Thursday, June 26, 2008
Everyone knows Scotland is home to some of the finest golf courses in the world. And with three championship courses, and over seventy golf courses in the surrounding area, Aberdeen, located on the North Sea, offers a golfing experience for everyone. While meeting in Aberdeen at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Convention Centre, what better way to spend leisure time than experience the famed links of Scotland?

Several new golf developments are now in the planning stages, truly making Aberdeen a world-class golfing destination, as well as the perfect location for delegates to spend free time golfing. Donald Trump and The Trump Organization have plans to build a spectacular golf development within the 14,000 acres of the Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire, located just minutes from the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Center. The $2 billion development, which will be known as Trump International Golf Links, Scotland, will be comprised of two 18-hole golf courses, a five-star hotel, 36 golf villas, 950 holiday homes, 500 houses, a state-of-the-art golf academy and a turf grass research center. Trump International Golf Links, Scotland is being built to be able to host major championships, such as the Open and Ryder Cup.

American golf legend, Jack Nicklaus, was named official designer of a championship course that will be the focal point of a proposed $80 million leisure and housing development on the Ury Estate at on the outskirts of Stonehaven near Aberdeen. "Ury Estate is a fantastic landscape that commands great views across the surrounding countryside and out to the North Sea, offering us a wonderful opportunity to design a memorable golf experience," said Jack Nicklaus. The 18-hole Nicklaus championship course is part of FM Developments' plans to transform the 1,500-acre Ury Estate into a massive complex with a hotel, shooting range, tennis courts and equestrian and fishing facilities.

Also in the planning stages, Blairs College, a former Catholic seminary closed 22 years ago is being restored to include a signature championship golf course, designed by European Golf Design and former Open champion Paul Lawrie. In addition to the golf course plans include: a luxury four or five star hotel, health club, conference facilities, sporting facilities and 280 houses.

Well known Hazelhead Golf Course hopes to move forward with a $200 million proposal, which would include the development of three golf courses, a 200-bed five-star hotel and conference center, and sporting facilities including a shooting and fishing, as well as an equestrian center. The three golf courses would feature a one of a kind "air conditioning system," keeping soil and grass at the perfect temperature.

"We are very excited about all of the new golfing developments in the Aberdeen area," said Brian Horsburgh, Deputy Managing Director, Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre. "Not only will Aberdeen be put on the map as a world-class golfing destination, the new golf courses will also attract business travelers from around the world, who come to Aberdeen for it's state-of-the-art meeting facilities and outstanding golf courses."

With three championship golf courses, over seventy courses in the surrounding area, and golf courses being developed by some of the most well known names in the industry, the next few years look to be exciting for Aberdeen as it grows as a golfing destination.
