Seventh luxury JW Marriott-branded hotel planned for India
Thursday, August 07, 2008
The seventh luxurious JW Marriott-branded hotel is planned for India by Marriott International under a management agreement reached with Uppal Hospitality Ltd., which is also developing the 175-room JW Marriott Hotel Chandigarh, India.

The 206-room JW Marriott Hotel Gurgaon is expected to open in mid-2009 in suburban New Delhi. It will be located in Gurgaon on the Delhi-Jaipu4 Highway.

“We are pleased to see our relationship with Uppal Hospitality Ltd., expand and to watch our hotels portfolio in India grow rapidly,” said Ed Fuller, president & managing director of international lodging for Marriott International. “We’ve been operating in India for less than 10 years and are thrilled by what we have been able to achieve in such a short time,” adding that the Marriott International portfolio in India today consists of six operating hotels with another 24 new projects in India slated to open through 2012 under signed management agreements.

JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts is Marriott International’s global luxury brand with 38 properties operating worldwide and another 21 under construction. The brand appeals to travelers who appreciate and value authenticity, unobtrusive personal service and luxurious but unpretentious surroundings.

The JW Marriott Hotel Gurgaon will offer four dining options including a three-meal casual restaurant, two specialty restaurants and an informal cafe-deli/bakery. In addition, the hotel will have a spacious lobby lounge, a stylish bar and a pool bar.

Recreational amenities will include a 2,000-square meter spa and fitness. The spa will offer five treatment rooms and the fitness center will offer a spacious gym, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. An outdoor swimming pool will round out its recreational amenities.

Other amenities that will be offered by the hotel will include a gift/sundries shop, retail shops, a business center and an executive lounge.

For conferences and social events, the JW Marriott Hotel Gurgaon will have 1,220 square meters of meeting space.  This will be comprised of a 400-square meter ballroom that will be divisible into five sections, three additional meeting rooms of various sizes, each of which will be divisible into two sections; and a board room.

Marriott International currently operates the following hotels in India: the 358-room JW Marriott Hotel Mumbai; the 178-room Goa Marriott Resort Panjim; the 287-room Hyderabad Marriott; the 286-room Renaissance Mumbai Hotel & Convention Center; the 171-unit Mumbai Lakeside Chalet Marriott Executive Apartments; and the 238-room Courtyard by Marriott Chennai.

Twenty-four additional properties are under construction or planned. They include one Ritz-Carlton Hotel and five JW Marriott Hotels in the luxury segment; two Marriott- and three Renaissance-branded hotels in the upscale, deluxe segment; 11 Courtyard by Marriott hotels in the upper-moderate tier; and two upscale Marriott Executive Apartment properties for extended stay travelers.

How do you expect luxury travel to perform in times of economic downturn?.

Providers of luxury travel products are going to witness shorter stays by their customers and an increase in seasonality.

People are going to become more value conscious and will opt for those luxury offers that represent a convincing value-for-money proposition. Providers of overpriced services are those to feel the pinch.

Both people paying for their personal trips and firms paying for their top executives' business trips will cut back on travel expenses, thus affecting all luxury travel providers.

It is going to be business as usual. Those people opting for high-end travel products are not going to be affected by the looming crisis.
