Aquis Hotels & Resorts
UAE funds in Greek Hotel Chain
Friday, November 21, 2008
As of today, HH Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Saeed Al Nahayan, a member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family, is the new chairman of Aquis Hotels & Resorts. This strategic action is expected to give a generous boost to the investment plans of the Greek hotel chain.

The serial entrepreneur, John Kent, CEO of Youtravel.com and main investor in Aquis Hotels & Resorts, started this concept of high-standard all-inclusive hotels in August by buying the first two hotels on the island of Corfu. So far, the chain has acquired three more hotels in Corfu, Kos, and Crete and is planning to expand to Eastern Mediterranean countries, Turkey, Egypt and Cyprus, with another 30 hotels in total within the next three years.

The previous chairman, David Howells, executive chairman of luxury operator Western & Oriental, became vice-chairman of Aquis. Other board members, apart from John Kent, include Amathus UK managing director Andreas Vasiliou, Professor Dimitrios Buhalis, deputy director of the International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research at Bournemouth University, and solicitor Dr Nicholas Kouladis, a law lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire.

Aquis Hotels & resorts’ portfolio includes Agios Gordios and Pelekas Beach in Corfu (to be renamed after their complete refurbishment into Aquis Agios Gordios Beach Hotel and Aquis Pelekas Beach Hotel, respectively), Sandy Beach Resort also in Corfu, Aqua Marine Resort in Kos, and Zorbas Village in Crete.

Poll
The imminent privatization of Olympic Airlines is expected to change the fate of this debt-laden airline. What do you think the new owner should do in regard to the brand name of the Greek national flag carrier?.

Keep “Olympic Airlines” as the name of the company as it remains a strong brand.

The company should keep “Olympic” as an element of its name but refresh the brand (e.g. “New Olympic Airlines”).

The airline should drop “Olympic” from its name. This brand has lost its value and isn’t relevant to the market anymore.
