Scheduled new flights will operate seasonally beginning May 8
Icelandair adds new destinations, reduces fuel surcharges
Monday, January 12, 2009
Icelandair has announced the addition of two new destinations in 2009. Stavanger, Norway, and Dusseldorf, Germany, will now be part of the network that includes over 20 destinations throughout Scandinavia, Great Britain and Continental Europe. “Stavanger is a hotbed of culture combined with foreign influences,” Icelandair said. Located on a peninsula in southwest Norway, Stavanger's city presents visitors of all kinds varied opportunities and experiences, such as visiting museums in the famous city centre or base jumping the popular Kjerag, a massive rock overlooking the fjords.

Meanwhile, Icelandair said it also picked Dusseldorf because the city is “one of Germany's largest economic centres, offers cosmopolitan fashion, as well as renowned festivals and trade fairs attended by millions every year.”

According to Icelandair, scheduled flights to these destinations will operate seasonally beginning May 8 through September 29, 2009, and will be part of a continuous effort to strengthen our network and offer our customers new experiences with our signature quality service.

In addition, the airline said it is reducing fuel surcharges to all destinations from its North American gateways effective immediately. "This reaction is in light of a recent drop in oil prices and Icelandair's continued effort to offer the most competitive rates and highest quality service to Iceland and beyond. These changes are currently viewable to all travel agents, tour operators and consolidators.”

Icelandair offers service to Iceland from Boston, New York-JFK, Minneapolis/St. Paul (seasonal), Orlando Sanford (seasonal), Halifax (seasonal) and Toronto (seasonal). Connections through Icelandair's hub in Reykjavik are available to more than 20 destinations in Scandinavia, Great Britain and Continental Europe.

Poll
The imminent privatization of Olympic Airlines is expected to change the fate of this debt-laden airline. What do you think the new owner should do in regard to the brand name of the Greek national flag carrier?.

Keep “Olympic Airlines” as the name of the company as it remains a strong brand.

The company should keep “Olympic” as an element of its name but refresh the brand (e.g. “New Olympic Airlines”).

The airline should drop “Olympic” from its name. This brand has lost its value and isn’t relevant to the market anymore.
