96% of foreign visitors came from European countries

In December 2008, the number of tourists arriving in accommodation facilities dropped by 8.6%, to 412,600 tourists compared to the same period in 2007. In the same period, Romanian tourists arrivals accounted for 84.2% of the total number, while foreign tourists arrivals accounted for 15.8%, shares approximately equal to those registered in 2007.

Arrivals in hotels had a share of 70.7% of the total arrivals in accommodation facilities in December 2008 and registered 9.4% drop compared to December 2007. Overnight stays registered in December 2008 represented over 1 mil., decreasing by 8.6% compared to December 2007. Overnight stays of Romanian tourists accounted for 85.9% of the total number of overnight stays, while foreign tourists overnight stays represented 14.1%.

Arrivals of foreign visitors in Romania registered at border crossing points were of 613,000, 5.2% lower than compared to December 2007. Most of foreign visitors came from European countries (96.0%).

Romanian visitors departures abroad, registered at border crossing points, reached 900,000 tourists in December 2008, 6.4% higher than compared to December 2007.

For the whole year of 2008, arrivals in accommodation facilities totalized 7.1 mil. tourists, 2.2% higher than compared to 2007 results. Arrivals of Romanian tourists accounted for 79.4% of the total number of arrivals. The arrivals of foreign tourists accounted for 20.6%, shares close to those compared to the same period of 2007. Arrivals in hotels in 2008 account for 73.7% of the total arrivals in accommodation facilities, 0.6% higher than in 2007.

Overnight stays registered in accommodation facilities in 2008 brought 20 mil., 0.6% more compared to 2007. Overnight stays of Romanian tourists accounted for 83.8% of the total number of overnight stays, while overnight stays of foreign tourists accounted for 16.2%.
