Skiers are taking off from Glasgow in record numbers, despite the recession
Skiers enjoy a 'piste' of the high life Winter holiday boost for Glasgow Airport
Wednesday, February 25, 2009
The launch of new services to some of Europe's best ski resorts has seen the number of skiing holidays almost double this winter. Since November, 18,349 skiers have flown out of Glasgow, an 85% increase on the previous year. Load factors - the percentage of seats sold - also rose to a new six year high of 84%.

The increased demand follows the launch of new flights from Glasgow to Turin, Grenoble and Chambery, in addition to the growing popularity of long established flights to Geneva and Salzburg. Now airport bosses hope to capitalise on the success of this year's season with an expanded ski programme for next winter.

Amanda McMillan, MD of Glasgow Airport, said: "This winter has been one of our busiest ever for ski holidays, with a near doubling of passenger numbers compared to last year. Despite the recession, the ski market remains particularly buoyant and we're delighted with the success of this year's programme. With several weeks left to the end of the winter schedule, we are on track to record our best performance for five years.

"This puts Glasgow in a great position for next winter and we are already talking to airlines about expanding their ski programme from Glasgow. Traditionally, winter holidaymakers heading for the slopes have had to connect through larger airports in the south. Now, with a growing range of ski destinations available from Glasgow, it's faster to fly from Scotland."
