Travel search site Skyscanner reports that Monday 6th July was its busiest day ever. Not only was traffic at a record high, but the site saw a massive week-on-week spike. Traffic rose 22% compared with the previous week, when the UK was still revelling in glorious sunshine. Top of the list of destinations searched for were the Spanish sunspots of Malaga, Alicante and Palma.

“It looks like the weather over the last couple of weeks has given us a taste for summer sun,” said Skyscanner director and co-founder Barry Smith. “Holidaying at home seems like a great idea when it’s as hot as it’s been over the last couple of weeks but user numbers have soared as the clouds rolled in. Hopefully this isn’t the end of the British summer but in the meantime UK holidaymakers are making sure it’s not the last they see of the sunshine.”

Last month Skyscanner reported a surge in late bookings – another factor that may be contributing to the increase in traffic on the site:

“We’ve seen a real difference in booking patterns this year,” said Barry Smith. “Financial uncertainty has made people more cautious about booking a long time in advance. But Scottish schools have already broken up for the summer holidays, and schools in England and Wales will break up in a couple of weeks so now the hunt is on for last minute bargains.”
