Recent poll by travel search site Skyscanner
20% of flyers will go 50 miles for cheaper flights say Skyscanner users
Tuesday, July 21, 2009
One fifth of air passengers are willing to fly from an airport that is up to 50 miles from their home, and fly to an airport that is up to 50 miles from their final destination, if it means getting a cheaper flight. In a recent poll by travel search site Skyscanner, 20% of voters said they would travel within 50 miles of either airport to save money.

However, 43% will pay more to fly from their nearest airport to the airport nearest their final destination. 14% are willing to travel up to 100 miles to/from either airport, and 12% would travel within 100 miles of the departure airport, but wanted the closest arrival airport.

The survey suggests that convenience is an important factor when it comes to buying flights and that almost half of air travellers don’t want to add extra travel time to their journeys, even if it means saving money on their flights.

Barry Smith, Skyscanner director and co-founder said: “Always weigh up the pros and cons of a cheaper flight from a more distant airport. Budget is vital to everyone, now more than ever, and savings can be made if you’re flexible and can travel to an alternative airport. However, travellers need to factor in the extra cost of getting to/from a more distant airport as well as the extra time added to their journey.”

Travellers should also double check where the airport is in relation to the city they want to get to. Some low cost carriers are known for flying to airports which are a long way outside of the city they claim to serve. For example, Ryanair fly to Frankfurt-Hahn airport in Germany which is a two hour bus drive from Frankfurt city.
