Corfu agents criticise OA flight cancellations

Corfu<.> travel agents have registered their concerns over Olympic Airways` decision to cancel 10 routes which since 1994 have linked the island with several western European cities.
The businessmen, in a letter to OA, stated that they believe Corfu needs scheduled flights despite the large number of charters which land there annually. Passengers on scheduled flights are an entirely different clientele with different needs, demands and financial habits, the agents said.
As a result of the expansion of convention and marine tourism on Corfu, the demand for direct flights to the island has been boosted. Additionally, the significant numbers of Corfu youth who study abroad as well as the Corfiot diaspora depend on these air connections.
The letter further stated that the total cost of flying in and out of Corfu is relatively small, since planes from Europe headed for Athens fly directly over the island.
