TEAM, the world leading designer and manufacturer of sophisticated Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs) for cruise and ferry terminals has recently been awarded a contract by Ports de Balears (the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands) to design and manufacture two Pegasus PBBs for the recently constructed Ferry Terminal in the Port of Alcudia on the Balearic Island of Mallorca. Delivery of the PBBs will take place in spring 2010.

The port of Alcudia, located on the north coast of the island of Mallorca, receives annually an average of 160.000 passengers. The new Ferry Terminal is designed and constructed with the objective of making Alcudia a key maritime connection between Mallorca, Menorca and Barcelona and possible other Spanish ports. The new passenger facility can handle up to 500.000 passengers a year.

The new Ferry Terminal area, which includes parking space for cars and busses, measures 3.600 square meters and the terminal building, with a height of 12 meters, has a ground floor and two upper levels. The building houses a luggage area, check-in services, a restaurant, cafeteria, waiting rooms and shipping agent offices, among other services. Two fixed elevated passenger walkways, connected to the first level of the building, lead to the Muelle Poniente and Muelle Ribera docks. TEAM’s mobile PBBs will provide in spring 2010 the final and safe connection between the elevated walkway and the passenger vessels.

The Pegasus PBBs, equipped with of solid rubber tires and motor driven, can move, GPS guided, along the docks. Electro-mechanically powered elevation systems allow the PBB to connect with ferry vessel entry doors at various levels. The boarding bridges will be half enclosed with glass mounted tunnel sections facilitating natural air-conditioning which enhances comfort to boarding and disembarking passengers. One of the unique features of this type of PBB is the integrated electro-mechanically powered telescopic ramp at the seaside cabin. Attached to the passenger ship door at seaside, the docking ramp automatically follows the vessel’s movements and will immediately undock in the event of an emergency.

The Pegasus PBBs will provide clearance for continuous equipment and supplies traffic on the docks and these PBBs will be compliant with all up-to-date international safety and security standards.
