Wizz Air announced that it would enter the Latvian market by opening three new routes from Riga, starting from 28 March 2010. The initial network will include thrice weekly services to London Luton, Oslo Torp and two flights a week to Turku.
Jozsef Varadi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air said: “Wizz Air’s opening of the Riga market is a natural next step in the airline’s expansion in Central and Eastern Europe. We continue our dynamic development to reinforce our leadership position in the region to the benefit of the ever growing number of people who can now afford to fly.”
Krisjanis Peters, Chairman of the Board of RIGA International Airport, said: "We are gratified that one of the fastest growing airlines in the Central and Eastern Europe is commencing operations at RIGA International Airport. Important preconditions to our cooperation were the advantageous geographical position of Riga and our new tariff policy, which is one of the friendliest among the airports of the European capitals. I am convinced that our business relationship will be mutually productive and in the future will enable Wizz Air to expand its geography of flights from RIGA International Airport.”
Kaspars Gerhards, Minister of Transport, pointed out that the announcements of Wizz Air and several other airlines of opening new or additional flights from RIGA International Airport proved that the decision about the new tariff policy had been right. "The developments in the aviation market of Latvia show the correctness of the chosen strategy. The airport tariff policy is designed to be sustainable, transparent and what is particularly essential today - predictable - contributing to development of RIGA International Airport into a serious transfer hub in the region of Northern Europe,” said Mr.Gerhards.
Concurrently Wizz Air announced that it would launch services from Prague to Bari and from Budapest to Turku, both twice a week initially.
