Train crashes into Helsinki Holiday Inn
Tuesday, January 05, 2010
A runaway train plowed through the end of a railway platform yestarday, crashing into the hallway of Holiday Inn Helsinki City Centre, adjacent to the main Helsinki Railway station.

BBC reports that train carriage, which reportedly had faulty brakes, traveled through a concrete barrier at the end of platform before crashing into the hotel. The train's conductor sustained minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The train was not carrying any passengers, but had three staff members onboard. They alerted other staff at the station, who helped clear the platform to which the runaway cars had been diverted.

The speed at impact was estimated at 20 to 30 kph (12 to 19 mph), causing the cars to jump buffers at the end of the tracks.
