Scotstralia - Kilt and Kangaroo
Scotstralia - Kilt and Kangaroo

United Airlines and Continental Airlines moved one step closer to becoming the world’s largest airline later this year as they unveiled the senior team that will lead the new merged carrier. The world’s third largest airline is also imminent, with news that BA and Iberia have had their proposed merger rubber-stamped by the European Commission.

So for fun, cheap flight search site, Skyscanner.com asked its staff to come up with a collection of fantasy destinations by splicing two places together to craft the ideal vacation location:

1. Scotstralia (Scotland + Australia) – the beauty and history of Scotland’s highlands, islands and lochs but swapping the wind, rain and flies for the Australian sun, sea and shrimps on the BBQ.

2. Mexiami – (Mexico and Miami) – Mexico's drinking age of 18 for the youngsters and their cheap prices fused with the swanky, trendy atmosphere of Miami where Montezuma is not out for revenge.

3. South Spafrica (South Africa + Spain) – the safaris of South Africa where you can spy the big five from treetop hotels, but well within range of cheap flights from the UK.

4. New Yordan (New York + Jordan) – mixing all the glitz, glamour and shopping of the US’s happenin' megacity with Middle Eastern heritage and exotic food, with the ability to bargain down the high price tags in Bloomingdales. The big Arabic apple!

5. Parygypt (Paris and Egypt) – the fine wines and haute cuisine of the world’s most visited city, but at the affordability of Egypt with some ancient wonders and camels to gawk at.

6. Japando (Japan and Orlando) – all the exotic allure of Japan with its futuristic cities, fascinating culture and delicious food, but with the ease of everyone speaking English, the sun and heat of central Florida and Mickey and the gang.

7. Hamsterlulu (Honolulu & Amsterdam) - the ethereal beauty of Hawaii's beaches and other natural gifts mashed up with the laid back recreational "policies" of Amsterdam could make for one trippy trip.

8. Barcelondon (Barcelona + London) – the great music and job-scene of London mixed with Spanish calm and beautiful Gaudi’s works spread all over the hills and beaches.

9. Bangholm (Bangkok + Stockholm) – the prices of Bangkok with its great value eating, drinking and vibrancy, combined with the charm, style and sophistication of Stockholm (and without the expense!).

10. Germindia (Germany + India) – the sensory assault of India with its pulsating cities, incredible food and ancient temples, but with the German efficiency of trains that run on time, drivers that obey the rules of the road and delicious beer that is sold in huge mugs.
