Copenhagen voted the first place on the list of the best places to visit in 2011
Copenhagen voted Destination of the Year 2011
Thursday, November 25, 2010
Copenhagen was awarded Destination of the Year by European Consumers Choice, ahead of Barcelona, Rome and Madrid.

"Copenhagen is one of Europe's most interesting cities right now. We try to nominate the ten cities we feel are buzzing the most. We most definitely believe that Copenhagen is doing just that", says the CEO of European Consumers Choice, Maximilien Lejeune, as the reason for the nomination of Copenhagen as destination of the year.

Over the past few years, Copenhagen has grown and renewed itself in a large number of areas. A string of new hotels has opened, as have a new congress centre, the low-cost terminal in the airport and over the coming years both the metro and the harbour will be extended significantly. The city has also been the setting for several large international events, which have given massive coverage in all types of media internationally.

- Copenhagen is really buzzing, says Aneh Christian Hajdu, Head of Communications for Wonderful Copenhagen, and adds "I was reminded of just that last week, when we received a visit from several hundred travel bloggers from all over the world. They fell for the relaxed Copenhagen lifestyle and friendly hospitality with a bang - even in a rainy November. They were full of praise that we were so friendly, open and helpful. In fact several of them said they would like to be reincarnated as Copenhageners!"

The European Consumers Choice Awards are presented every year in a number of categories which the organisation sets and which consumers then vote on. This year, Copenhagen received 25% of the votes - 4% more than Barcelona. Copenhagen was the only Scandinavian city nominated and maintained the lead throughout the whole month of voting.

The award will be presented to Wonderful Copenhagen in Copenhagen some time in the next couple of months.

European Consumers Choice is a young organisaton which each year holds a vote to find Europe's best companies based, among other things, on design and innovation. Last year they added European Destination of the Year as a new, independent category.

As well as the award, Copenhagen will also have its own page on the European Consumers Choice website for the coming year. It is a website with more than 50,000 visitors a month: www.europeanconsumerschoice.org
