Tombo now joins Jurere International in Florianopolis (SC), which was the first certified Brazilian beach. The seal awarded in 2009 to the beach in the state of Santa Catarina was also renewed for another year. The Blue Flag is flown in more than 3,200 beaches and marinas around the world.

"This is a program of extreme relevance and credibility. The Blue Flag certification represents an important attraction because it serves as a reference for tourists around the world," said Ricardo Moesch, Tourism Structuring and Planning director of the Tourism Ministry.

The candidate beaches and marinas for the Blue Flag must meet criteria in the areas of environmental education, safety signs, and information to users, as well as related to the quality of the water and coastal environment. The certification is ultimately awarded by FEE after the process is completed, which includes audits and evaluation by a national and international jury.

The jury is made up of representatives from the Tourism and Environment ministries, the World Tourism Organization, World Health Organization, and other international and national bodies. The Blue Flag is awarded for one year. The beach or marina must undergo a new evaluation process to maintain its status.
