“There are so many artists and other creative types in Berlin now that it’s really one of the most exciting cities in all of Europe,” says Context co-founder Paul Bennett. “I’ve greatly enjoyed working with our group there to develop ways of seeing Berlin. I think we have one of our most unique programs in Berlin.”
As with its tours elsewhere, Context will cap its group walks in Berlin at six participants, the lowest group size in the walking tour industry. Most walks will last three hours and be led by local Ph.D.-level scholars and other experts—Context’s signature. Known as “walking seminars,” each activity is aimed at independent travelers who want to acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation for Berlin and its history.
“One of the key issues in Berlin is resolving its complicated history in the 20th century,” says Julian Smith-Newman, a historian and longtime docent with Context who worked in the organization’s London and Rome programs before moving to Berlin to oversee the rollout of their walks here. “We’ve spent a lot of time developing the right tours for such issues as the Holocaust and the rise of the Nazis.”
Initial offerings include walks on Jewish history, the Cold War, and the Berlin Wall. The Topography of Terror walk focuses on the emergence of the Nazi party, World War II, and the Holocaust, visiting such sites as the Reichstag, Peter Eisenman’s Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, and an exhibition on Berlin during the war.
Drawing on its roots in historical and cultural touring and its longstanding programs in the great museums of the world, Context is also launching walks of the Pergamon Museum and the newly reopened Neues Museum, and also a walk of the city’s exciting gallery scene.
Walks will be offered both privately on request and as regularly scheduled group walks. Private walks will cost between €290 for the group, while group walks will cost €65 per person.
