Iceland Express is celebrating its best passengers figures to date, making June 2011 its record month. The low cost airline witnessed a 44% increase in passenger numbers in June 2011, compared to June 2010 and a 51% increase in June 2011 compared to May 2011.
Iceland Express’ London market share soared to more than 40% in June 2011, which is Iceland Express’ record since the company began in 2003.
“Iceland has always been a popular destination for the UK market, but the economic crisis and the subsequent weakening of the krona has made it more affordable and appealing to travellers,” says Iceland Express’ marketing director Siguryor Valur Sigurosson.
He added: “In Iceland we live with the volcanic activity everyday and this is a real attraction for visitors who want to travel in and experience a country with a unique and diverse landscape. The erruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano has certainly showcased our country in a new light and attracted a new wave of traveller.
“We predict these passenger figures will continue to grow, particularly with our new Edinburgh and USA routes opening Iceland up to more of the UK and offering multi-centre trips.”
Iceland Express is Iceland’s low-fare airline, with prices starting from £89 one-way including taxes. The airline flies daily from London Gatwick to Reykjavik and twice weekly from Edinburgh to Reykjavik.
