2011 Winter Wonders, with Greece as the guest of honour
Cultural winter wonders in Brussels
Thursday, December 01, 2011
With Greece as the guest of honour, the 2011 Winter Wonders promises to live up to its name, offering treats for your taste buds and your eyes. A great opportunity to discover or rediscover the delights of Greece, a popular destination for many Belgians, with its stalls at Place Sainte-Catherine and its traditional products including olive oil, biscuits, honey and cocktails from every corner of this wonderful paradise.
When it comes to the events put on for the occasion, on Saturday 3rd December, from 8pm, two acrobats will get the dancing started in a giant inflatable snowball. This “Living Snow Globe” will roll over the cobbles of the Grand-Place, under the snowflakes falling throughout this captivating spectacle.
To give youngsters a real treat this weekend, on Saturday 3rd December, Saint Nicholas himself will be parading through the streets of Brussels with his entourage, starting at 2.30pm. Historic fraternities, folk musicians and dancers will accompany Father Christmas from the Place de la Vieille Halle aux Bles to the Grand-Place for a wave from the balcony of the Hotel de Ville, at around 4.30pm.
Manneken Pis will of course be wearing his Saint Nicholas costume until 5th December.
To continue the fun, on Sunday 4th December, at 5pm and 8.30pm, the ice rink will be the venue for “Migration”, performed by the Mossoux-Bonte troupe. Seven dancers will be flying gracefully over the ice to tell the story of migrating birds, leaving the patterns of their journeys on the ice.
Last but not least, Rue Devaux will be flown over by “Les Voyageurs”. With his ghost-like mesh-covered characters, Cedric Le Borgne takes a new look at dreams and reality.
