Over 22 million Brits to take a break in Britain over the festive period
Thursday, December 22, 2011
Over 11 million Brits (23% of the adult population) are planning to take an overnight trip in Britain over the two-week festive period, according to VisitEngland’s
Christmas Trip Tracker survey released today. Almost 10 million Brits (20%) will take that trip in England; an increase of two per cent from the same period last year. Unsurprisingly, many Britons will be paying visits to friends and relatives in England over the Christmas period; 15% plan to take a trip for this purpose, which is on a par with last year.
James Berresford, Chief Executive of VisitEngland, commented:
“From countryside walks to stately home tours, extreme sports to theatre trips, England has a wonderful range of activities on offer during the festive period. If you are welcoming friends or family for a visit over the next two weeks, why not get them out of the house and show them the great destination on your doorstep?”
He continued:
“The traditional English Pantomime can be enjoyed in countless forms, from village halls to city theatres up and down the country. Dance lovers can choose from classic Christmas ballets from Leeds to Brighton, and heritage buffs can visit historic houses such as Muncaster Castle and Hampton Court Palace, all beautifully decorated for the festive season. Those looking for something a little different could try surfing on one of England’s beautiful beaches in Cornwall or Cleveland. A visit to another part of England, whatever the purpose, is a great chance to experience something new, so why not make it your New Year’s resolution?”
Just over a quarter of Brits (26%) will take an overnight trip away from home; an increase of five per cent compared to the same period in 2010, when severe winter weather disrupted travel plans across the country.
