Britain showcases 200 gardens in bicentennary year
Wednesday, April 07, 2004
This year Britain celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Royal Horticultural Society with the Year of Gardening in 2004. As many of the UK`s gardens hold special events, VisitBritain - the authority for tourism in Britain - has updated and relaunched its successful Britain`s Gardens campaign with a free 48-page brochure featuring some 200 gardens throughout England, North Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The brochure contains a wealth of information to help visitors enjoy Britain`s gardens in whatever season they visit - in winter, the famous snowdrop carpet awaits them at the Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire, while colour bursts to life in spring with 200 varieties of daffodil at Scotland`s Threave Garden.

Sections reveal the secrets of cottage, wildlife and walled gardens, rooms and parterres as well as traditional plants and planting. There`s city and coastal gardens brushing shoulders with those that have been painstakingly restored to their former glory such as the `Garden Lost In Time` - 15th century Aberglasney Gardens in Carmarthenshire. Discover 70 varieties of England`s national flower amid the rose gardens of Cambridgeshire`s Peckover House or the waterfalls and woodland of fine landscape gardens such as Dinefwr in Carmarthenshire.

Britain`s Gardens urges visitors to experience for themselves the fascinating history behind Britain`s oldest tennis court at Falkland Palace and Gardens in Fife or the herb garden at Hall`s Croft in Stratford-upon Avon that may have treated Shakespeare. There`s advice for creating a British garden abroad and amazing suggestions for finding mazes of all kinds, plus a calendar of events to help plan that trip.
