WestJet announces new nonstop Calgary-Palm Springs service
Monday, July 12, 2004
WestJet, Canada`s national low-fare airline, has officially announced new service to Palm Springs for the upcoming winter season. Effective January 7, WestJet will operate twice-weekly nonstop service from Calgary, Alberta, the airline`s headquarters. It has been several years since nonstop Calgary service was last operated. WestJet is making its first foray into the United States with scheduled service to several major business and leisure markets. This will be the second Canadian city with nonstop service to PSP, as Vancouver service has been in place for several years.

Newly acquired 136-seat Boeing 737-700 aircraft will fly the Calgary-Palm Springs route. The aircraft are currently being outfitted with LiveTV seatback satellite programming for the entertainment and enjoyment of passengers during flight.

As Calgary is the airline`s hometown, the service it provides is widely known and utilized by the city`s local residents and visitors. With this announcement, getting away to Palm Springs or Calgary just became more attractive and incredibly more convenient. In addition to Calgary, connections will be available to/from the following Canadian cities: Vancouver, Abbotsford, Kelowna, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg. Offering one-stop links between these cities and Palm Springs only increases the potential popularity of the new route.

This announcement, which comes after months of ongoing dialogue between the Airport and WestJet, will increase trans-border passenger traffic and strengthens the air accessibility between Canada and the Palm Springs area, said Richard S. Walsh, A.A.E., the Airport`s Director of Aviation. David Ready, Palm Springs City Manager said, improved access between Canada and Palm Springs will provide a significant contribution to the valley-wide economy. We are pleased WestJet has chosen to serve our community.

Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is located in the City of Palm Springs. As the only commercial service
airport in Riverside County and serving a population of over 500,000 permanent residents, PSP is the close, comfortable, and convenient choice for over one million annual passengers. Served by 12 airlines providing up to 60 daily departures to 17 nonstop destinations in North America, PSP is but a single connection from most domestic and international markets.
