Some key points:

  • The two places that offered the  biggest savings to those booking vacation rentals were both college towns near Boston – Somerville, Mass home of Tufts University and Cambridge, home to Harvard and MIT. Somerville averaged just $90 vs. $245 for a hotel room (63 percent savings) Cambridge averaged $125 vs $334 (also a 63 percent savings.)
  • Surprisingly, consumers can save money in places perceived to be exclusive beach communities such as East Hampton on Long Island, NY. Vacation rentals average $327/night vs $765/night for a hotel room – that’s a 57 percent savings.
  • No matter the destination, travelers generally lock in summer vacation rentals earlier than they do hotels: 19 percent of summer rentals were booked prior to June 1 last year, compared to only 14 percent of summer hotel stays.
