The Maldives celebrates Visit Maldives Year 2016 with a VIP welcome for its 500,000th visitor

Visit Maldives Year 2016 is a year-long campaign which aims to boost tourism to the country, targeting a total of 1.5 million tourist arrivals during the year.

The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), has declared that, in celebration of the Visit Maldives Year 2016 (VMY2016) campaign, it will mark its 500,000th visitor by rewarding the VIP guest with the grand honour of becoming a Maldives brand ambassador.

On 1st January 2016, the VMY2016 campaign commenced with an event which celebrated the arrival of the very first tourist into the Maldives in 2016. The Acting Managing Director of MMPRC, Haris Mohamed, awarded a free holiday from Outrigger Konotta to Kate Holmes from the UK. A special stamp was also unveiled, which is being used throughout 2016 to stamp all foreign passports as a token of the special campaign.

Visit Maldives Year 2016 is a year-long campaign which aims to boost tourism to the country, targeting a total of 1.5 million tourist arrivals during the year. Based on current arrival figures, MMPRC predicts that the 500,000th visitor will arrive in the Maldives in May 2016. A number of international and national events, competitions and awareness programmes are being carried out throughout 2016 by MMPRC, together with the Ministry of Tourism, to display the richness of the Maldives as a destination and portray it as the exotic place it is to the world.

Events and competitions taking place this year that showcase Maldivian tradition, the uniqueness of the destination and the reasons to visit the islands include:

 – International Surf Competition: This summer, the Maldives, a surfers paradise, will host the event with world-class international surfers
 – 100 Islands in 30 Days: Worldwide bloggers are being offered the chance to explore the culture and heritage of the Maldives, from the smallest capital city in the world to some of the most luxurious resorts
 – Maldives Whale Shark Festival: The event will celebrate the rich marine life and cultural diversity of the Maldives, with the aim of promoting sustainable tourism
 – World Travel Awards – Grand Final Gala Ceremony 2016: The Maldives this year will be the proud host country of one of the most prestigious events in the travel and tourism industry
 – International Tourism Film Festival: Taking place 10th – 12th July 2016, the festival will be the first of its kind in the Maldives. It aims to unite people who share a love of the arts, tourism and sports through screening film entries that showcase interesting and unique destinations around the world
