Crete celebrates World Tourism Day with free entrance to archaeological sites

World Tourism Day's purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.

HERAKLION – World Tourism Day takes place annually on 27 September and this year is to be celebrated in Crete’s capital, Heraklion with a series of events from 27-29 September, including free entrance to archaeological sites such as the world famous, Knossos, considered the oldest ancient city in Europe dating back to 7000 BC.

The 3-day bonanza of activities including free concerts and exhibitions will give holidaymakers a unique opportunity to experience the culture of Crete all in one place in Heraklion with over 300 exhibitors and musical performers showcasing the bands and music of Crete as well as traditional products.

Food tastings will introduce Cretan cuisine – renowned as one of the healthiest diets in the world and on Saturday 29 September visitors can enjoy exploring Knossos, Phaestos, Malia, Tylissos and the Heraklion Archaeological museum absolutely free.

The focal point for most of the activities will be Museum Square, Agios Titos (Saint Titos’) Square, Kallergon Square, Eleftherias Square and Agia Ekaterini (Saint Catherine’s) Square in Heralkion.

World Tourism Day is organised by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation and has taken place annually on 27 September since 1980. The event seeks to address global challenges and to highlight the contribution the tourism sector can make in reaching these goals.

Independent Greek hotel chain, Aldemar Hotels, offer a choice of four luxury hotels in Anissaras on the outskirts of Hersonissos,  just 25 minutes transfer from Heraklion – the 5* Royal Mare, the 5* Knossos Royal and Royal Villas plus the 4* all-inclusive Cretan Village. All are ideal locations for enjoying an autumn break in the sun and making the most of the World Tourism Celebrations in Crete.

Rooms are available on an all-inclusive basis at the 4* Cretan Village in late September, based on two people sharing a garden view bungalow. There is a minimum two night stay. Alternatively, the 5* Royal Mare includes bed and breakfast, based on two people sharing a garden view bungalow. There are  a number of flights from UK to Heraklion, Crete on scheduled services of Aegean and Monarch Airlines, charter airline jet2.com and low cost carriers easyjet.com.
