EUROCONTROL accepted the first deliverable of the SESAR Definition Phase study contract from the SESAR consortium of 29 companies and organisations and 20 associated partners. The SESAR Definition Phase, co-funded by EUROCONTROL and the European Commission, aims to define, by March 2008, a Master Plan for the future European ATM system. The SESAR Definition Phase study contract will produce six main deliverables, covering all aspects of the future European air traffic management system, including its supporting institutional framework. The first deliverable covers the current situation of the European air traffic network.

“We are pleased to be able to accept the first deliverable from the SESAR Consortium, according to the schedule we had agreed at the beginning of the contract,” said Bernard Miaillier, the Head of European ATM Strategy and Convergence at EUROCONTROL. “This deliverable is crucial as it lays the ground for the whole of the rest of the project.”

The first deliverable – known as D1: Air Transport Framework – the current situation – describes the major aspects which define, describe, shape and influence the air transport industry today. These include the macro-economic situation including constraints and opportunities; public opinion; the roles of the different stakeholder groups and the relationships between them. D1 also looks at the positive aspects and the deficiencies of the current situation and also assesses activities that are currently underway.
