Work is underway on a plan to re-design the busy terminal forecourt at Glasgow Airport in a bid to create a cleaner, safer environment for passengers and staff. A change in the designation of the inner and outer lanes will mean that from early June, airport licensed taxis and public service buses will move to the inner lane next to the terminal building, while private cars and private taxis will only be allowed to drop-off passengers at the outer lane.

The use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology together with drop-down barriers will ensure that only pre-registered vehicles will be able to access the inner lane, thereby improving safety and security.

A separate `drop off` lane will be designated for private cars and private taxis in the outer forecourt. In line with current restrictions, motorists will not be able to collect friends and family from the terminal forecourt. Passenger `pick up` zones will be designated in Car Parks 1 and 3.

Private buses and commercial and delivery vehicles will access the airport using a dedicated zone on Bute Road, again through a controlled barrier.

The changes are designed to ease congestion around the airport terminal and create a safer and cleaner environment for passengers and airport staff and ease congestion around the airport terminal. Currently, over 1,400 vehicles access the forecourt every hour during peak periods.

Airport managers hope the new lay out will also encourage greater use of public transport. At present, around 12% of passengers access the airport using public transport.

Managing Director Alan Barr said: Our aim is to create a safer and cleaner environment for passengers and airport staff, promote public transport and ease congestion around the airport terminal. In order to achieve this, we are changing the way vehicles access the terminal buildings.

With passenger numbers increasing month after month, it is vital that we take these steps now. Road traffic volumes around the terminal forecourt have become unsustainable. Reducing the amount of traffic stopping in front of the terminal will improve security and reduce the risk to pedestrians accessing the airport.

We also want to give priority to public transport users, in line with our commitment to increase the volume of passengers using public transport.

The new layout has been drawn up after consultation with airlines, suppliers and public transport providers.
