InterContinental Hotels Group has won two major awards at the inaugural MAXXotel Awards, which recognise the most profitable hotels in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach was named Best Performing Resort in Australia, while Old Sydney Holiday Inn was named Best Performing Australian Mid-Market Hotel. The awards, known to be the world’s first hotel awards made solely on the basis of operating performance, reinforce InterContinental Hotels Group’s ongoing commitment towards driving excellent hotel returns for its owners.

The MAXXotel Awards were given out at the Australia, New Zealand & Pacific Hotel Investment Conference, organised by Horwath Asia Pacific and Sonnenblick-Goldman Asia Pacific, in Sydney recently. Out of a total of 10 possible award categories, InterContinental Hotels Group hotels were eligible to enter seven. Six of the Group’s hotels were shortlisted as nominees in five categories. In addition to the two wins, the Group’s InterContinental hotels in Sydney, Wellington and Moorea in French Polynesia, as well as Crowne Plaza hotels in Christchurch and Terrigal were also nominated for awards in recognition of their exceptional performance. Nominations relied on achievement of benchmark profitability performances.

The MAXXotel Awards are reputed to be the world’s only hotel awards to be based solely on hotel operating performance. The tough selection criteria means that only a small number of hotels make the nomination cut for each category and nominees are regarded as the cream of the crop. The winners of this year’s awards were determined based on data obtained in the Horwath 2006 Survey of Operations, which analysed the 2005 financial performance of close to 250 hotels, resorts and serviced apartments in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region.

Said A. Patrick Imbardelli, chief executive, InterContinental Hotels Group Asia Pacific: “Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach and Old Sydney Holiday Inn’s outstanding operating performance and their impressive showing, along with all our nominees, at the MAXXotel Awards drive home the fact that we have the brands, the resources and the management expertise to enable our hotels to outperform the competition. These latest wins further illustrate our dedication to driving excellent returns for our owners and reinforce our global reputation as the partner of choice.”

Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach, sometimes referred to as “Sydney`s Seaside Village”, is located along the coastline, east of Sydney’s central business district. Old Sydney Holiday Inn is located in the city’s Rocks district, a harbourfront village of quaint cottages, close to the world-renowned Sydney Opera House.
