Malmaison adds York Hotel to growing portfolio, launched with new concept Asian fusion Skybar

Malmaison announces launch of new city centre hotel, opening its doors on 20th May.

LONDON – Malmaison is opening the doors on the 20th May to its first boutique hotel in the city of York, and the seventeenth of its ever-growing UK portfolio.

Breathing new life into the Aviva insurance building, Malmaison York will offer everything the brand is synonymous with, from stylish bedrooms to modern interior design. The hotel will also be home to  new rooftop skybar, Sora, an Asian fusion tapas and cocktail bar, a brand new offering from the Malmaison group. The hotel will also house the iconic Chez Mal Brasserie & Bar, a popular destination staple of the brand nationwide.

The hotel has 150 guest bedrooms and suites, offering incredible views across York Minster and the famous City Walls. A new extension to the rear of the building will feature Malmaison’s distinctive Work+Play facilities with meeting pods ideal for hourly use or longer term co-working space, conference rooms and event space for up to 150 guests. Chez Mal Brasserie & Bar will serve up its usual mix of a la carte dishes, signature drinks amidst a fun, upbeat atmosphere. Guests will also be able to enjoy the spa, a fully equipped and spacious Technogym, and on-site Starbucks with an outdoor terrace.

Sora will offer cocktails and Asian fusion tapas style sharing plates and stunning city views from a spacious outdoor terrace. The tapas on offer will be a fusion of traditional dishes, from sushi and steak to skewers and sticks from the Robata grill. Specially concocted cocktails like Cherry Blossom Negronis and Sesame Old Fashioneds will give an authentic feel, expertly crafted with House of Suntory spirits, enhancing the Asian influence.

Designers have taken inspiration from the city’s industrial heritage and brutalist architecture, mixing concrete and moody elements with softer textures and confectionery touch points, drawing on York’s famous alumni including the Rowntree and Terry families. Yves Klein blue painted concrete waffle ceilings feature in the reception, bar, brasserie and breakout spaces, which sit alongside bold block colour mid-century graphic inspired rugs and furnishings.

“As a city, York has so much to offer; from Roman and Viking roots to independent retail stores, and is one of the UK’s most coveted tourist destinations. It’s an incredible place and it only makes sense for Malmaison to become part of this story,” said Guus Bakker, CEO EMEA at Frasers Hospitality, owners of the Malmaison and Hotel du Vin brands.

“We are already present in York with Hotel du Vin on The Mount, and look forward to building our boutique offering further with this launch. As people plan staycations for the year ahead, the new hotel, alongside Chez Mal and our new Asian fusion skybar Sora, will offer something exciting for locals who are looking to try something new, as well those visiting the city from across the UK.”

Situated on the corner of Rougier Street, the hotel is a stone’s throw away from some of the city’s most famous attractions, including York Dungeons, York Castle and the historic York City walls. York train station and the River Ouse are both a few minute walks away, with the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens, York’s Chocolate Story Museum, JORVIK Viking Centre and the world famous university a short walk over the bridge.
