Moxy Bergen awarded full BREEAM certification

Among the sustainability initiatives that made it possible to achieve the certification are: use of ocean water to cool the building, repurposing excess heat to CO2 as a refrigerant, and the procurement of RECs ensuring 100% renewable energy.

The BREEAM award is a prestigious certificate in sustainable building processes, which has now been fully awarded to Moxy Bergen, scoring the second highest status available: BREEAM Excellent.

BREEAM was the first sustainable building rating system in the world, certifying that buildings are designed and constructed with the environment in mind. Located on the waterfront in the newly developed area in Bergen, Solheimsviken, the building that is occupied by Moxy Bergen has now been recognized by this green building program. The hotel has achieved the status of Excellent in the BREEAM program, the second highest rating possible.

Among the sustainability initiatives that made it possible to achieve the certification are: use of ocean water to cool the building, repurposing excess heat to CO2 as a refrigerant, and the procurement of RECs ensuring 100% renewable energy.

“Buildings use resources, generate waste, and are costly to maintain and operate. We are pleased that GC Rieber made the effort to build a sustainable building as it allows us to more easily operate the hotel sustainably,” explains Per Denker Sørensen, CEO of Core Hospitality. “The BREEAM certificate, in general, is a strong indication that Moxy Hotels is among the leading sustainable hotel choices in Bergen. The Excellent level, specifically, is an incredible feat that highlights the tremendous sustainable considerations made when building the hotel.”

GC Rieber Eiendom’s sustainability values are shared with the operator of Moxy Bergen, the third-party management company Core Hospitality. Recognizing the efforts of the owner, Core Hospitality is committed to further reducing the building’s environmental impact by operating on 100% renewable energy and optimizing building processes and operative procedures in accordance with the Green Key program.
