Rhodes<.> has already recorded increases in both domestic and international arrivals as the 2000 tourist season gets underway. According to Stella Karavokyrou, director of the Hellenic Tourism Organisation (EOT) branch in Rhodes, the island`s airport has already welcomed its first German tourists for the year. February saw a 16.94 percent rise in domestic arrivals while the international arrivals figure soared by 159 percent.

More specifically, 45,415 passengers travelled to Rhodes aboard 847 flights in February, representing growth of 24.6 percent compared to the same period last year.

This increase can be attributed to both the greater number of domestic visitors but also the significant numbers of Israelis who travelled to the island last month. Domestic arrivals totalled 21,036 compared to 17,989 in February 1999 while international visitors rose to 1,793, up from 691.

A positive start has also been witnessed on Crete, where the season officially begins in mid-March. Travel agencies are already speaking of an 8-10 percent rise in tourists compared to last year, which also ended with a 10 percent increase.

The island hosted its first chartered flights on March 6th.
