An Exhibition Managers Degree course, or EMD which will set an international standard for the professional training of exhibition organisers and managers of exhibition and conference venues was launched by the

Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and the Global Association for Exhibition Industries (UFI).

“One of the five key strategies of TCEB is the promotion of Thailand’s MICE industry,” says Kajit Habanananda, Director General, TCEB. “The TCEB/UFI course will be a great asset in developing the knowledge and skill of Business Operators, and, indeed, all personnel in the MICE industry. In addition to the course, it is TCEB’s intention to elevate technological and management capability in Thailand by introducing a MICE Information Centre.”

The degree course will be directly in line with Thailand’s goal of becoming the premier ASEAN exhibition hub by 2010. The Kingdom is already on target as an aviation hub with growing popularity as a MICE destination with world class meetings and conference facilities and a wide range of exotic incentive destinations. Add to these industrial growths, a strong domestic demand for the world’s latest cutting edge technology and the support of a specialist bureau for conventions and exhibitions, and the goal is clearly attainable.

In hosting the course, TCEB will be responsible for the organization of the programme, in collaboration with TEA as well as UFI, and also the Transfer Centre for Exhibition Convention and Event Management (ECE), which was responsible for the educational concept and curriculum.

The 150-hour EMD programme will be taught by professional instructors, and successful students will be fully equipped to successfully manage exhibition and convention centres, and produce winning trade shows and conferences.

It has been tailored to the requirements of middle and senior organizers of exhibitions and conventions, government institutions, and project and operations managers of exhibition and conference centres.

TCEB and UFI join forces to introduce the world’s first training programme designed specifically for personnel in the MICE industry.

The curriculum includes project management, business strategy development, risk management, intercultural human resources management and cost control. Major concerns will be market research, CRM, public relations, sponsorship, special marketing and logistics.

“This is a guarantee that our exhibition and event industry professionals will be trained to the highest international standards,” said Pojai Pookakupt, Board Member, and Chairperson of Good Governance, Selection, and Compensation Sub-Committee of TCEB. “Knowledge and ability acquired through the EMD course can be applied directly to exhibition and conference management.”

Ms. Pojai Pookakupt, TCEB Board Member, and Chairperson of the Good Governance, Selection, and Compensation Sub – Committee, has been very satisfied with the project’s progress so far:

“Right now, there are 32 people who have applied to the program from both Thailand and abroad,” she explained. “There are a total of 15 Thai participants along 17 participants from nine foreign countries, which has exceeded our expectations, as we originally anticipated having 15 Thais and 10 foreign participants in EMD. This heartening development signals good news for the program, and can provide reassurance that political situations are not stopping people from visiting Thailand, and that MICE tourists do not feel threatened about attending an event here.”

“This cooperation with UFI has been an important step forward for TCEB, as business development and the creation of opportunities are our main objectives in 2007. We are concentrating of improving the potential of Thai entrepreneurs to meet regional standards, and this will increase the flexibility of the organization. Education that meets international standards will give our people the power and dynamism to rise above the competition, and go to the top as ASEAN’s premier MICE hub in 2010,” she concluded.
