The Hudson Whaler Hotel debuts as Hudson’s newest gem

Historic downtown building is revived as a new boutique hotel.

HUDSON, NY – The Hudson Whaler Hotel, the newest boutique hotel in Hudson, NY, is now accepting reservations for stays beginning June 22, 2021. The new hotel incorporates modern style while staying true to the property’s historic roots, with thoughtful touches that gently remind visitors of Hudson’s maritime origin. Inspired by the nautical and artistic nuances of the charming town, The Hudson Whaler Hotel exudes an unmatched sense of ease and refinement centrally located on Hudson’s main spine, Warren Street.

“A coveted destination to many, Hudson is known as an artists’ enclave with plenty of cultural and outdoor experiences to keep visitors of all ages entertained," said Michael Glickman, partner of The Hudson Whaler Hotel. “When developing The Hudson Whaler Hotel, we wanted to create a retreat that not only affords guests of a superlative stay, but also educates visitors of the town’s rich whaling past.”

Unique Heritage and Bespoke Welcome
Following a restoration, The Hudson Whaler Hotel preserves the integrity of the historic building it resides in while introducing contemporary touches that speak to the desires of today’s traveler. The hotel’s design by New York-based, Harry Heissmann reflects the ethos of Hudson with a commitment to showcasing original details, as well as local artists and materials. The warm and inviting lobby evokes a feeling that one has walked into the living room of a ship captain. Visitors are greeted with a display of ornate custom woodwork, including the original handcrafted, three-level staircase and an elegant, new custom fireplace created by a master carpenter. The sumptuous staircase and banisters set the color palette for the moody space with rich chocolatey brown tones to reflect a sophisticated, lived-in antique look, while playing on the luster of the woodwork.

A detailed mural of the Hudson River from Manhattan to Hudson by Ron Genereux adorns the lobby walls, perfectly juxtaposed against detailed wall carpentry. Overhead, vintage Italian crystal chandeliers sourced from one of Warren Street’s noteworthy antique shops, Ida’s Eye, compliment other decorative pieces found locally. Custom wallpaper with whaling ship motifs was created to add attentive detail to the lobby’s powder rooms. The lobby seating areas are arranged in individual nooks to offer secluded spaces for visitors to retreat. In the back of the hotel, an outdoor courtyard provides the ideal backdrop for a glass of local sparkling wine with friends or an intimate wedding reception.

Detailed Guestrooms with Local Touches
The hotel’s hallways are painted in a jewel box style in dark blue as if walking through the interior of a ship. Upon opening the door to one of the property’s 16 suites guests are welcomed to a bright space dressed in soothing light-nautical tones of blues and whites. Large windows that allow the natural light to filter in are donned in custom fabrics to compliment the chic custom carpeting below. With the intention to create a cozy respite, suites feature fireplaces decorated with custom whaling vessel wallpaper, as well as offer king beds and large bathrooms complete with deep soaking tubs.

An array of in-room amenities includes a thoughtfully curated refrigerator stocked with locally sourced beverages and snacks including a complimentary handmade chocolate whale, crafted by local chocolatier Vasilow's Confectionery. Additionally, thoughtful consideration was given to the sound proofing of each room, using sustainable, recycled paper pulp for insulation to ensure a quiet stay.

“Our challenge was to seamlessly restore and blend all the gorgeous existing ornate woodwork of the staircase, banisters and trim details with our new custom woodwork, furniture and decor that is period correct, functional and comfortable – and we are very proud of our efforts,” said Benjamin Rinzler, partner at The Hudson Whaler Hotel.

Located in the heart of downtown, The Hudson Whaler Hotel is just steps from popular shops, galleries and restaurants, and offers travelers unparalleled access to a myriad of outdoor experiences for all seasons, including premier hiking and skiing locales, water activities and supreme fall-foliage and apple picking spots.

The Hudson Whaler Hotel joins a collection of sister properties also owned by Mr. Glickman and Mr. Rinzler,  each a quick jaunt from each other, including: The Nest; The Nautical Nest; and The Hudson Mariner, ideal for wedding buyouts and other group gatherings.
