The Travel Institute added two courses to its new Lifestyle Specialist program: Golf and Spas. The courses join Gay and Lesbian Travel and Accessible Travel in a new line of specialist courses that reflect important trends in consumer travel planning. Other upcoming courses will include: Adventure Travel, Diving, Honeymoons and Destination Weddings, Luxury Travel, and Yacht Charters.



Spas, written by Marilyn Green, editorial director of Worldwide Spa Review Magazine, teaches travel professionals how to tap into this growing market. The course explores the demographics of the spa seeker, explains the six different types of spas and how to match your clients to the right spa for their needs, and provides tools and tips for working with spas to build preferred supplier relationships. Spas also covers how to implement a marketing plan by establishing mutually beneficial partnerships, cross marketing to other niche travelers, such as honeymooners, and selling the benefits of a spa to close the sale.



Golf was written by Michael A. Cox, former golf and travel editor for Golf Magazine, American Golf Magazine, Golfers Gazette, with contributions from golf writer, Nina Africano. It explores the types of golf travelers and why they travel, offers lessons on the language of golf and the types of golf courses, and details the top golf destinations in the U.S. and around the world. Golf also contains tips on building a golf travel business, including how to book tee-times, how to locate and market to golf travelers, and how to build a product portfolio. The course is a valuable reference tool for all travel professionals who wish to build a loyal, repeat golf customer base.



The Travel Institute will offer seminars based on four Lifestyle Specialist courses, Golf, Spas, Gay and Lesbian Travel, and Accessible Travel, at its National Forum, September 10-12 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, Phoenix. The interactive seminars will be led by subject matter experts and will include an experiential component, such as a tour of the golf course or spa at the Biltmore. Participants will review the course material with Travel Institute trainers and fellow colleagues and have the opportunity to take the certification test.



The Travel Institute offers two levels of Lifestyle Specialist designations for each segment. By preparing for and passing a standardized test, travel professionals will earn a Specialist designation for that niche. Those Specialists then have an opportunity to become a Certified Specialist by demonstrating advanced knowledge through relevant business experience in that segment. This two-level structure applies to each of the nine courses being developed this year.



Experiential criteria for certification include: attaining at least one year of relevant travel industry experience, completing a required number of related business activities from a checklist, and maintaining the certification every five years. Certified Lifestyle Specialists will be featured prominently on The Travel Institute’s Web site and will be recognized in the trade and among consumers as having attained the industry’s highest level of specialist training.
