Wales outshone by other UK destinations says Pitchup.com

Bookings to Scotland were up 63% yoy whilst England also fared well with an overall increase of 47%. Wales experienced the slowest growth yoy, with overall bookings up 43% yoy.
Founder of outdoor accommodation specialist Pitchup.com, Dan Yates, says “Our overall domestic bookings for August were up 47% yoy after so many Brits chose to holiday in the UK this year – in part perhaps because of the unseasonably warm weather. Scotland has fared particularly well, conceivably prompted by the year long cultural festival in 2014 and the Commonwealth games – or those wishing to visit now as the destination flirts with independence.

As the Chariman of the Welsh Tourism Alliance announces that he had “never known such a sluggish Bank Holiday”, outdoor accommodation specialist Pitchup.com releases its latest figures which show an overall annual increase in domestic bookings in August, with England and Scotland riding high compared to Wales.

Despite the washout August bank holiday weekend, which was expected to hit the camping and caravanning sector the hardest, Pitchup.com experienced a 28% increase in domestic bookings for that period, following a last-minute surge by resilient holidaymakers. This is in contradiction to the doom and gloom outlook recently issued by the Welsh Tourism Alliance.

It’s also worth noting a recent VisitBritain report saw the highest recorded increase in inbound tourism over the first six months of any year – a 3% increase from 2014. With Pitchup.com’s bookings coming from 88 countries, this is bound to be having a positive impact on figures.

He concluded: “Latest VisitEngland figures showing a 23% increase in nights and 15% spend increase are evidence that the camping and caravanning industry is thriving and enjoying the highest growth of all accommodation sectors. The stats show Wales is still significantly up year on year, but perhaps isn’t performing in line with peers or as well as the Welsh Tourism Authority would have hoped.
