World Travel Awards

The World Travel Awards serve to acknowledge, reward and celebrate the enormous  achievements to be found in all sectors of the global travel industry.

World Travel Awards is the most prestigious, comprehensive and sought after awards programme in the global travel and tourism industry.

Established in 1993 to acknowledge and celebrate excellence in all sectors of the industry, World Travel Awards is recognised as the hallmark of excellence, with the winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire. The Wall Street Journal recently heralded the World Travel Awards as the "travel industry’s equivalent to the Oscars".

The first ever ceremony was held in Hollywood in 1994. Since then there have been events every year to celebrate the best of the best in the travel industry on a global level. World Travel Awards has been held in famous travel hot spots including New York, Las Vegas, The Bahamas, London, Jamaica, Kuala Lumpur and St Lucia.

In 2007, the World Travel Awards expanded from one event annually to regional ceremonies for each continent, culminating in a grand final. Events included the Middle East Awards in Abu-Dhabi; North and Central America in New York; Europe in Newcastle; Asia and Australia in Bangalore and the global World awards in Turks and Caicos.

The 2008 Grand Tour was even bigger, including an inaugural Green Awards and South America Awards. This year’s venues include Durban, Sydney, Shanghai, Orlando, Poprad, Rio, Dubai, culminating with a Gala Ceremony in Turks and Caicos.
2009 will see the World Travel Awards land in 7 hubs of travel like UAE, South Africa, Singapore, Brazil, Portugal, Mexico and Jamaica.

The prestigious awards scheme is also developing its online presence. Video clips and interviews from the past ceremonies are now available on a YouTube channel that has now been launched at www.youtube.com/worldtravelawards, channelling the tens of thousands across the world.

Voting Procedure

World Travel Awards is proud of its impartial nature and the comprehensive process of its voting programme. Votes are cast by an audience of 167,000 travel agents and tourism professionals from over 175 participating countries. Voted for by industry peers, this level of accountability makes winning an award the greatest form of recognition in the travel business.

In 2007 the number of people voting was up by 12 percent compared to 2006. For the tourism trade, winning a World Travel Award is more than an award, it is a personal and reliable endorsement from thousands of professionals around the globe.

In 2008 the nomination and voting process is undertaken via voting from travel agents and travel industry professionals worldwide. However, in 2009 we are introducing improvements to the voting system to ensure that the awards are both transparent and balanced.

In addition, we are asking our WTA Global Media Partners to encourage their own readers to vote, using a link with the WTA website.

The Grand Tour

World Travel Awards is a highly regarded award ceremony aimed at honouring the best of the travelling industry. The first award ceremony took place 16 years ago in Hollywood. Today there are awards ceremonies all over the globe rewarding excellence regionally and globally. The awards take place in Asia, Australasia, Indian Ocean, Europe and North, Central and South America.
